USS Towers (DDG-9): A Legacy of Valor and Service

The USS Towers (DDG-9) was a Charles F. Adams-class guided-missile destroyer, proudly serving the United States Navy from 1961 to 1990. Named after Admiral John Henry Towers, a pioneering figure in naval aviation, the ship embodied innovation and readiness throughout its nearly three decades of service.

Commissioned on June 6, 1961, at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, the USS Towers was equipped with advanced radar and missile systems, making it a vital component of fleet air defense during the Cold War era. With a displacement of approximately 4,500 tons, a top speed of over 30 knots, and a complement of nearly 350 officers and enlisted personnel, the Towers exemplified the might and agility of the U.S. Navy's destroyer fleet.

The Towers saw extensive action in the Vietnam War, providing naval gunfire support, screening carrier strike groups, and participating in operations along the coast of Southeast Asia. Its advanced weaponry, including the RIM-24 Tartar surface-to-air missile system, made it a formidable presence in the region.

Throughout its service, the USS Towers upheld the Navy's mission of maintaining freedom of the seas, supporting allies, and protecting U.S. interests worldwide. After its decommissioning in October 1990, the ship was sunk to become a permanent reef.

The USS Towers (DDG-9) remains a symbol of dedication and excellence, celebrated by the sailors who served aboard her and remembered for her significant contributions to naval history.
